God is Sovereign in Giving Gifts

19 11 2012

Psalm 115:3 “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.”

The understanding of God’s sovereignty is a tremendous source of comfort and blessing. God is real and alive and He reigns from heaven over all things. As one considers God’s sovereignty, the doctrine of election and the overruling providence of God immediately comes to the mind (Romans 9:11-16; Genesis 45:5, 7).

Paul also knew that the Church in Corinth must understand God’s sovereignty in the diversity of spiritual gifts distributed to the body of Christ. The body was to refrain from jealousy and appreciate the spiritual gifts given according to God’s will for the edification of the members in Corinth. Observe God’s sovereignty:

1 Corinthians 12:3: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

1Corinthains 12:11: “But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”

1 Corinthians 12:18: “But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”

Corinthians 12:28: ” And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
